PAINLESSLY TREAT YOUR GINGIVITIS

NU DENTISTRY, SPRING, TEXAS

Red, puffy, and bleeding gums are some of the tell-tale signs of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. What is gum disease? Also known as periodontal disease, it is an infection of the gums caused by plaque and tartar collecting and hardening under the gums. As the buildup grows, gingivitis can worsen into periodontitis, which not only attacks the gums but the jawbone and connective tissues supporting your teeth. Left untreated, your teeth can shift out of place, loosen, or even fall out! Some of the most common signs of gum disease include: bright red or purple gums; swollen and tender gums; bleeding gums when brushing and flossing; receding gum line; chronic bad breath and taste in the mouth; gum pain when biting or chewing; teeth sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweets; loose and shifting teeth; or new spaces appearing between teeth. At Nu Dentistry Spring, our expert periodontist team makes it simple and stress-free to treat your gingivitis and gum disease. We take a responsive approach to your smile. With our office’s top-of-the-line technology, we can better detect gum disease earlier, allowing for faster and more successful treatment. Whether you need a deep cleaning, pocket reduction surgery, or grafting, you can trust our dentists to have your smile bright and healthy with no discomfort or fuss. Count on us to help you put your best smile forward again! Say goodbye to your painful, swollen gums with professional gingivitis treatment! THE STAGES OF GUM DISEASE

By treating your gum disease earlier, our team can better help your smile make a full recovery

GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is the least serious form of gum disease. It first appears after a few days of missed brushing and flossing as plaque and tartar accumulate below the gums. Oral bacteria irritates and inflames the soft tissues, turning them red, swollen, and tender. The damage to your gums isn’t permanent.

MILD PERIODONTITIS

Once periodontitis develops, the impact becomes more permanent. The gums begin pulling away from the teeth, creating pockets that can trap more plaque and tartar. Periodontitis can also begin attacking the jawbone and connective tissues that work with your gums to anchor your teeth in place.

MODERATE PERIODONTITIS

As your periodontal disease worsens, the gums further recede and the gum pockets deepen. More gum, bone, and soft tissues are destroyed, and the teeth start to loosen and move out of alignment. Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, giving them access to the rest of your body and general health.

ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS

In the final stage, between 50 and 90% of the periodontal tissues can have been destroyed. As more of your teeth’s foundation is lost, they may become loose enough to fall out. Left untreated, our dentists may need to extract your teeth as even aggressive treatment can’t save them.

TREATING YOUR GUM DISEASE

Count on the Nu Dentistry team to get your periodontal health back on track

At-home dental care

The number one way to fight periodontal disease, especially in the earliest stage, is to establish a good, healthy oral hygiene routine. Flossing once and brushing your teeth at least twice a day are critical to clearing your teeth of plaque and bacteria and keeping them from building up again. You may also want to look into a toothbrush that works well for you, mainly because having the right brushing technique can change the effectiveness of your strokes.

DEEP CLEANING

Once periodontitis develops, our team will want to perform a deep cleaning. Deep cleaning goes beyond what a standard dental cleaning can to thoroughly clean your teeth down to the roots. Our gentle dental hygienists do this in a two-step process: scaling and root planing. First, we scale your teeth, scraping your whole tooth clean of hardened plaque and tartar. Then, root planing lets us smooth down your teeth’s roots so the gums can reattach to them and heal.

POCKET REDUCTION

If frequent deep cleanings aren’t enough to keep your gums’ pockets clean and gum disease at bay, oral surgery may be needed. With pocket reduction surgery, a small flap of gum tissue is pulled back from the tooth, giving us easy access to thoroughly clean the roots. Once the roots have been polished and the diseased tissues removed, the gum flap is put back in place, tighter than before, to reduce the pocket’s size.

GRAFTING

With dental grafting, our periodontists can replace missing gum and bone tissue to keep your smile more secure again and prevent tooth loss. The new tissues will integrate with the old, reinforcing them and helping promote natural tissue growth for a stronger and healthier smile.

Gum Disease Questions

In some cases, gum disease can cause a dental abscess to form. This pocket of pus is incredibly painful, and if not safely drained, can spread infection throughout the mouth and body. In extreme circumstances, it can even lead to potentially life-threatening sepsis. Additionally, late-stage gum disease can cause oral bacteria to reach the bloodstream and infect the rest of your body. On a long-term scale, severe periodontal disease can put you at increased risk for conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and certain cancers.

Yes, gingivitis can go away on its own as long as you maintain excellent and consistent dental hygiene habits. With about two weeks of consistent brushing and flossing, the gums can return to a healthy pink as your gingivitis is not just cured but reversed. However, more severe periodontal disease stages should be seen by our team at Nu Dentistry for professional care. In these cases, the damage to your smile is permanent, but we can keep your gum disease in check.

Deep cleanings are usually done in two to four visits to comprehensively clean your entire smile. Cleaning one-fourth of your smile takes about 45 minutes. Patients with four appointments will have four 45-minute visits, while those with two appointments will have two 90-minute visits.

Some patients may only need one deep cleaning in their life. However, others will require regular scaling and root planing every three to four months to manage their gum disease. If deep cleanings are needed more frequently, we may recommend pocket reduction surgery instead.

Luckily, our periodontists ensure your deep cleaning is as comfortable as possible! While periodontal disease causes the gum to become tender and sensitive, we will first numb the area with a local anesthetic so your visit is pain-free. We also offer dental sedation like laughing gas to give you more comprehensive relaxation, both in mind and body.

The first and most recognized gum disease symptoms are gums that are red, swollen, and painful to the touch and gingival bleeding. If periodontitis sets in, you may also notice your teeth appearing longer than normal, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, new spaces appearing between teeth, and tooth looseness.

The Best Dentist In Spring
Sandra Archuleta

We have been looking for a family dentist for a long time, we have tried a bunch of places but nothing felt quite like home. Not too long ago we stumbled upon Nu Dentistry and met Dr. Ali. Not only was he professional, kind, and gentle, but he always finds a way to fit us in when we need an appointment. He’s also pretty funny! I appreciate that he takes the time to explain what he’s doing, before he does it. That really puts me at ease.
