TOOTH REPLACEMENT OPTIONS

Your next steps following emergency tooth extraction…

DENTAL IMPLANT

Dental implants are embedded directly into the socket to restore your entire tooth, from root to crown. They fuse with the jaw to keep the bone strong and healthy while securing your new tooth solidly in place. Implants are long-lasting, often staying in pristine condition for a lifetime.

DENTAL BRIDGE

Dental bridges can quickly and affordably replace up to four missing teeth in a row simultaneously. The replacement teeth (pontics) are bookended by two dental crowns. By placing the crowns on the neighboring teeth on either end of the gap in your smile, you can easily restore your smile back to its old self.

DENTURE

Dentures are incredibly flexible to your smile’s needs and can replace anything from a few teeth to an entire smile at once. They stay in place using the natural shape of your mouth to their advantage. Some have added clasps that hook onto your remaining teeth for extra security and stability.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our expert dentists make sure your extraction procedure is smooth, quick, and painless

There are two types of tooth removal, simple and surgical extraction. Which one our dentist will perform depends on the tooth’s condition. Teeth that are visible above the gum line will need a simple extraction. During this procedure, our dentist will use a dental elevator to loosen your tooth before removing the tooth from the gums with forceps. This process is incredibly quick, taking only 3 to 15 minutes to complete per tooth. However, if your tooth is submerged below the gums, we will need to surgically remove it. The dentist will make a small incision in your gums, giving them direct access to the tooth. From there, we can proceed similarly to a simple extraction, loosening the tooth from the gums before pulling it free. In some cases, we may cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make removing them faster and easier. Because this procedure is more involved, it takes an average of 45 minutes. Does tooth extraction hurt? No, teeth extraction is smooth and painless at our Spring office. Local anesthetic completely numbs the tooth and surrounding area to ensure your comfort during the procedure, even during surgical or emergency tooth removal. If you're particularly afraid or anxious about your treatment, we also provide a range of safe dental sedation options to help you relax both mentally and physically.

DO YOU NEED WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL?

Our dentists may recommend removing wisdom teeth for these reasons...

3D redering of wisdom tooth pointing horizontally against back teeth
Tooth Direction

Sometimes a wisdom tooth will emerge sideways or tilted from the gum.

X-ray of impacted wisdom teeth
IMPACTION

Many wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to emerge from the gums. Left submerged, impacted and partially impacted wisdom teeth are at high risk for causing cysts, tooth decay, infection, and gum disease.

CROWDING

If a wisdom tooth can’t come in properly due to overcrowding, it can harm nearby teeth and cause them to shift out of alignment. Not only will these teeth need repairing, but you may even need orthodontics to fix the damage.

TOOTH ORIENTATION

If a wisdom tooth comes in slanted or sideways, it will need to be removed.

PAIN

Toothaches and jaw pain are never a good sign, and they can indicate that there are current problems with your wisdom tooth. Depending on the circumstances, emergency tooth extraction may be needed.

Orthodontic Problems

For teens and adults with braces or clear aligners like Invisalign, incoming wisdom teeth can be a nightmare. They run the risk of losing all of their hard-earned straightening progress, setting them back to square one—or worse.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in the United States. While cleanings can help prevent gum disease, there are other factors that can cause this condition. Gum disease not only affect your tooth, but it also deteriorates the surrounding bones and ligaments causing tooth loss and a generally weaker immune system. Treatment for gum disease should be prompt and thorough to eliminate bacteria and prevent further deterioration.

Tooth Extraction FAQ

Teeth are only pulled if they pose a threat to the rest of your mouth. Reasons we may extract a tooth include severe cavities, periodontitis, significantly fractured or broken teeth, and impacted wisdom teeth. In some cases, problems like overcrowding and crossbite may require pulling a tooth to give needed orthodontic treatment room to work and safely move your teeth.

Our dentists have performed thousands of tooth extractions, and we’ve got the treatment down to a science. Simple extractions only take between 3 and 15 minutes for each tooth, and surgical extractions take 45 minutes on average.

Your tooth extraction cost can vary depending on the type of extraction, tooth’s location, and whether the tooth is a wisdom tooth. Additionally, the type of anesthesia can impact the cost as local anesthetic is included, but dental sedation will be a separate cost. Tooth extractions are also covered up to 80% by dental insurance, the exact amount depending on the provider.

Missing teeth aren’t just an aesthetic problem. The jawbone depends on the pressure and stimulation your teeth’s roots provide to upkeep themselves and stay strong. Without that pressure, the bone shrinks (resorbs) into itself, leading to teeth shifting out of place, jaw sagging, your bite changing, and potentially further tooth loss. However, dental implants act as a fully artificial tooth, root and all, stopping resorption in its tracks. Bridges and dentures instead keep nearby teeth where they are, minimizing the resorption’s effects.

Impacted wisdom teeth are highly prone to painful and dangerous dental problems like tooth damage, infections, and cysts. Even partially impacted wisdom teeth are at high risk for cavities and gum disease because they are hard to keep clean and plaque-free. We typically recommend tooth removal before these issues occur. Otherwise, impactions show themselves with red and bleeding gums, jaw pain and swelling, and difficulty opening the jaw.

You shouldn’t eat or drink anything for the first hour after your appointment. After that, be sure not to drink any water from a straw or rinse your mouth for at least 24 to 48 hours. During this initial period, the socket will be forming a blood clot, which is vital for your mouth to properly heal. These actions can disturb the clots and make your recovery more difficult.

The Best Dentist In Spring
Sandra Archuleta

We have been looking for a family dentist for a long time, we have tried a bunch of places but nothing felt quite like home. Not too long ago we stumbled upon Nu Dentistry and met Dr. Ali. Not only was he professional, kind, and gentle, but he always finds a way to fit us in when we need an appointment. He’s also pretty funny! I appreciate that he takes the time to explain what he’s doing, before he does it. That really puts me at ease.
